TÜV AUSTRIA is proud to announce the launch of its updated OK biobased certification and logo scheme, designed to better reflect today’s sustainability expectations and provide clearer, more transparent communication regarding the biobased content of certified products.
Why are we changing the scheme?
The OK biobased scheme was first introduced 15 years ago and has now been revised to reflect today’s market requirements. The update improves transparency of claims in line with the European Directive 2024/825 on empowering consumer for the green transition, provides clearer differentiation between end-of-life options and material origins, and responds to market demand for greater visibility of products with high biobased content.
What’s new?
Introduction of a new “Class 5”
A fifth classification range has been added to highlight products with exceptionally high biobased carbon content. This allows manufacturers to showcase top‑tier performance and ensures greater differentiation in the marketplace.
Clearer ranges instead of the previous star system
The star system has been translated into explicit percentage ranges, offering a more transparent and intuitive understanding of biobased content for customers and consumers.
A fresh new look: blue label background
Since OK biobased certification focuses on the origin of raw materials, the label background has been updated from its previous color to blue, visually distinguishing it from end‑of‑life certifications such as OK compost or OK biodegradable.
